Budget Priorities Committee (BPC)

The Budget Priorities Committee (BPC) is the primary source for allocating funding to student groups. In the winter 2002 semester, a new initiative was launched to allow groups to apply for funding more than once each semester. The current system is made up of three cycles per semester. Groups can apply for funding in any or all of these funding cycles. The hope of BPC is that this new system will make it easier and more convenient for student groups to obtain funding, while increasing the efficiency in which allocations are made.

Campus Governance Committee (CGC)

CGC nominates students to University committees and acts as a liaison between MSA and its appointees on these committees. CGC also maintains a list of committees to which MSA appoints, and current appointees to those committees.

Communications Committee

We publicize and promote the Michigan Student Assembly on campus. We are working to build the ties between the assembly and the student body. It is our hope that as more people learn about MSA, what it does, and how it works, we will attract more students who are interested and qualified to get involved in student government. Additionally, we want more students to not only understand how to contact and bring their issues to the assembly, but to feel comfortable doing so.

Here's a list of our projects:

  • Festifall/Winterfest/Open House - recruitment
  • Last year we wrote a blurb in the RHA move-in guide, an MSA insert in the orientation folder, and put an MSA poster up at orientation to reach out to freshmen. We'll be doing the same again this year.
  • Meet-a-Rep Night - held to give students in dorms a chance to ask questions about MSA.
  • Helping other Committees and Commissions publicize their events and reporting upcoming MSA events to the Daily.
  • Entree Plus expansion
  • MSA Diag Boards/Banners/Posters
  • Fireside Chats - held with the president and 20 students chosen randomly.
  • This semester we will have two Fireside Chats with President Joe White, one with the athletic director and all the varsity head coaches, and one with all 8 of the Regents.
  • The Communcations Committee has a GREEK RELATIONS SUB-COMMITTEE We're working on....
  • Getting a bus out to the rock
  • Helping to facilitate ties between the Greek system and the administration.

Campus Safety Commission

The Campus Safety Commission focuses on all of the issues that surround safety on campus. Recently, we have been focusing on the recent wave of Residence Hall crime, meeting with DPS Director Bill Bess and other safety officials. We meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday nights, and we would love to see you there with concerns and ideas. E-mail unsafe@umich.edu if you have any questions!

Community Service Commission (CSC)

CSC is one of two funding bodies in the Michigan Student Assembly (MSA). University of Michigan students passed a ballot question that added $1 to the annual tuition per student to be used for community service projects by U of M students; this is where CSC gets its money for student groups. CSC funds projects which focus on direct service (i.e. Soup kitchens), community development (i.e. events that bring the community together and raise awareness/education for certain community issues), and community organization (i.e. events or projects which organize the community to work on certain issues together; activism). CSC funding works on a reimbursement process.

Health Issues Commission

Currently the Health issues commission is working on sending a letter to all Freshman outlining current health issues that impact students and ways to keep students safe and healthy. They are working with upper level administrators at UHS and Student Affairs, and also with the UM Health System.

Topics so far include STDs, nutrition, eating issues, Mono, and a host of others.

Also, the commission is working on combating smoking in Ann Arbor, and possibly providing workshops through the university health system on how to quit. They are working with the City Council, and possibly state representatives and senators to get a proposal passed that would reduce/eliminate smoking in some facilities in Ann Arbor.

International Student Affairs Commission (ISAC)

The International Student Affairs Commission (ISAC) exists in order to address the concerns, issues, and problems and enhance the educational experience of International Students at the University of Michigan.

The International Student Affairs Commission serves International Students by providing a voice in MSA, keeping them informed about the activities/resolutions of MSA that may affect them and maintaining a budget with which ISAC can create and/or co-sponsor programs and events in collaboration with international student individuals or organizations.

North Campus Affairs Commission (NCAC)

Current projects of the North Campus Affairs Commission Include:
  • Weekly North Campus Movie Nights
  • Comprehensive Parking Study
  • Restarting the Bursley "Vomit Comet"
  • Advertising for SpringFest
  • Painting murals in bus stop huts

Through the exemplary work of Elliot Wells-Reid, the North Campus Affairs Commission has built the foundation for much-improved relations between UM's Parking and Transportation Services.

See this page for more details on adding a parking structure to North Campus, and working to change bus routes.

Voice Your Vote Commission

Currently the Voice Your Vote Commission is working on bringing political leaders to campus, especially for the upcoming election for Governor, Secretary of State, etc. They also are trying to start up the Democracy Project again.

This newsletter/pamphlet discusses an issue, and presents both sides on the issue and is available to students. They also hope to co-sponsor a debate on an issue like Civil Liberties, and as always, they are active in getting students register to vote.

Women's Issues Commission

Current projects with the Women's Issues Commission include:
  • Taking a stand against sexism and sexual assault by working with the media
  • Increasing issue visibility on campus
  • Supporting peer education programs
  • Building the V-Day and Take Back the Night rallies
  • First Year outreach programs.

WIC is looking forward to taking a leading role in the planning for FemFair 2002 starting the week after Spring Break.
