Committees and Commissions
The bulk of MSA\'s projects are planned and executed by MSA\'s commissions, committees, and task forces. Any student may be a member of an MSA commission, committee, or task force. They meet at least once a week. To get involved, just go to a meeting or contact the chair to find out how you can help.

Peace & Justice Commission
Chair: John Oltean
Vice-Chair/Co-chair: Felix Lopez

The Peace and Justice Commission is dedicated to increasing awareness of a variety of peace and justice issues and to inspiring students to become involved in peace and justice activism. We have sponsored a wide variety of events in the past focused on topics such as the rights of women, LGBT, and immigrant workers; access to treatment for HIV/AIDS and TB; and veterans' experiences in the war in Iraq.

EVENTS:

Event 1: Interhumanitarian Council Human Rights Month
Description of Event: 10 of the organizations represented by the IHC that are human rights oriented are collaborating together on Tuesday January 8th from 10-3 in the fish bowl lobby. Each organization will promote their own vision as well as the IHC. They will also promote the Human Rights Lecture Series which will take place throughout the month of January and early February. Three different UM professors will be talking about torture, immigration, and international law and human rights.
Tentative Location, Date, and Time: Tuesday January 8th from 10-3 in the fish bowl lobby

Event 2: MLK Symposium- Readings of Prisoners’ Reflections on the Works of Martin Luther King
Description of Event: In this year's MLK Symposium, incarcerated citizens will respond to the messages of Martin Luther King Jr. and discuss current civil rights issues. We will receive the prisoners' responses through mail correspondence and will print the responses into an anthology. Some of these responses will be read at the event by our speakers. We hope to expose students to a new perspective on incarcerated citizens and on civil rights issues that affect this population. The United States currently has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with rates disproportionately high for the African American population. Our goal is to give a voice to a community that is often not heard, especially in regards to civil rights issues. By exposure to the thoughts of incarcerated citizens, we hope that the University of Michigan and Ann Arbor community can better understand current civil rights issues and reflect on the ideals of Martin Luther King Jr.
Tentative Location, Date, and Time: Anderson Room- Michigan Union, 1/21/08, 1pm

Event 4: Fair Tees Promotion
Description of Event: A new initiative designed to reach out to a majority of student organizations, Fair Tees was kicked off late last semester. Response from those already contacted has been strong, and Peace and Justice would like to further these efforts by hosting an event to network with those who are interested in learning more.
